Custom Hat Patches in Ireland: What to Know Before You Order

Hi everyone,

I've been looking into custom hat patches in IE lately, and thought it would be useful to start a discussion for anyone in Ireland thinking about adding patches to caps for a club, business, event, or just personal use.

There's more to it than I expected, so here's what I've picked up so far:

  • Choose the right attachment type. Sew-on patches are the most durable and suit caps that get worn daily. Iron-on is quicker but can lift over time, especially on curved crowns. Velcro is handy if you want to swap patches around.
  • Size matters. Hat patches usually need to be smaller and more compact than jacket patches. A patch that's too big can distort on the curve of the cap and look uneven.
  • Keep the design simple. Fine detail and tiny text don't stitch well at small sizes. Bold shapes, clean lines, and a limited colour palette give the best result.
  • Check the fabric. Structured caps, beanies, and bucket hats all behave differently, so the backing and application method should match the hat material.
  • Order a sample if you can. Especially for bulk orders, seeing one finished patch on an actual hat saves a lot of hassle later.
  • Think about the end use. Team caps, staff uniforms, and promotional headwear all have slightly different needs when it comes to durability and finish.

For anyone who's already had hat patches made here in Ireland, I'd love to hear how it went. Which attachment method worked best for you? Any tips on sizing or getting the placement right? And if you're still planning, what's your main question: cost, minimum order quantity, or design?

Looking forward to hearing your experiences.
