Does the Wedding Band come on First or Last?

What is the history and tradition behind matching couple rings?

After getting married, couples can find it confusing to decide which wedding ring is placed first. Wedding traditions are constantly changing and evolving. Does the wedding band or the ring of engagement go on the finger first? Wearing both wedding rings at the same time or wearing his and hers jewelry each on your hands? The wedding band must match the engagement and comes with it?

All of these are great questions. There's really no wrong or right answer. Just traditions and nontraditions. Whichever camp you fall into. In addition to the question of which comes first, many people are also curious about whether rings are worn on the right or left ring finger.

The amount of information available is staggering, and many of these contradict or compete with each other. This is a recipe for a difficult decision! It's like information overload or analysis paralysis. No wonder couples are baffled.

Of course, the decision-making can be made even harder if, and when, you add infinity or eternity rings later on, as well as other rings. Some couples prefer to give infinity or eternal rings as a way to commemorate milestones of their marriage, such as the date of a couple's 10th anniversary or that of their child's birthday. Confused? We are also. Keep reading, as we attempt to shed more light on which comes first - the classic wedding band or the couple necklaces?

History and ancient Traditions

Take a step back into history and you will find the answer to this question. You may be surprised that even ancients had their own questions and opinions regarding the wearing of a wedding rings. It is believed that ancient Egyptians used their wedding rings to show their belief in vena amouris. Venaamoris is Latin and means vein or love.

According to Egyptian belief, this vena amours went straight from the ring fingers of the left hands into the hearts. If you imagine this "love-vein", it is easy to hear Bon Jovi singing the phrase "shot straight into the heart". It's one of the reasons that wedding rings continue to be worn on the left-hand ring finger.

The tradition of snuffing out the ears has been around for centuries, despite its lack of scientific basis. Of course the times have changed. Nowadays, a couple can choose from a variety of rings, including an engagement ring and a matching wedding ring. According to the ancient Egyptian tradition, they were firmly part of the Wedding Ring First.

This vena amours tradition is intriguing if you're curious. In short, the Egyptians felt that wearing the wedding ring so near to the heart represented a real expression of devotion and love. The closer to the heart a wedding ring was, the stronger love bonds were.

We don't think that moving a wedding band a few centimeters closer will have any greater effect than the opposite. However, if your heart belongs to ancient traditions and you enjoy romance, it's worth a shot. It's not harmful, and it might be that you like paying respect to the gods behind tradition and ceremony.

Continue reading if your preference is to wear an engagement ring at the top of the left ring fingers. You can always switch it from your left to right hand when you exchange nuptials. After the wedding, return it to its original place on your left ring finger. Others will wear their engagement rings on the right hand and switch them to the opposite hand once they get married.

Modern Perspectives

The old tradition isn't the only one that can determine whether or not a wedding band is placed at the top of a ring. You can choose to follow modern trends and place your wedding band before your engagement rings.

While it is common sense to wear wedding and engagement bands in the order you receive them, wearing rings this way also carries a significant amount of symbolism.

Before marriage, and even before the wedding ceremony, the engagement ring serves as a declaration of your intentions. It is a marker for all future intentions. Consider it a prelude to the start of a great story.

Wedding bands come after the ceremony. Imagine your wedding bands or the man who buys yours as the endcap of your great love tale. It can signify the fulfillment of promises you've made to your lover and that you intend to keep them, even in sickness or in health. If you are a fan, simply place the marriage band over your engagement ring.
