What Does Unusual Noise From an Industrial Gearbox Indicate?

Hello everyone.

I’d like to get some opinions on diagnosing unusual noise from an industrial gearbox. If a gearbox suddenly becomes louder than normal, what should be checked first? Could changes in noise indicate worn bearings, damaged gears, insufficient lubrication, or alignment problems?

I’m particularly interested in knowing how technicians distinguish between normal operating sounds and noises that indicate developing mechanical problems, especially with high-performance gearboxes operating under demanding conditions.

Are vibration measurements and oil analysis usually performed alongside acoustic inspections? For equipment running continuously, how useful is keeping a baseline noise level for comparison?

Any troubleshooting experiences or recommendations for monitoring industrial gearbox noise would be helpful.
